Automatic Transmission Produces Lower Emissions Thanks to Volvo

When it comes to Volvo, you can always expect the unexpected. Most recently that adage applies to the automaker's advancements in low fuel consumption drive technology. Up until now, in order to attain better fuel economy drivers had to use manual transmissions. That unspoken rule didn't bode well with the motivated automaker that felt that eco-conscious consumers should be given the choice of automatic as well. So, Volvo engineers set out to shake things up.
A few dedicated tweaks and a bit of testing later, the Volvo Car Corporation spit out a 1.6-liter diesel engine combined with an automatic Powershift gearbox that brings CO2 emissions down to the same level as manual. Wondering exactly how the green magic happens? According to Volvo, the following were key in achieving low emissions and fuel reduction.
- Modified engine and gearbox software- Reduced friction between gearbox components
- Optimized electrical systems
- Start/stop technology cuts off engine while car is rolling
For our fellow overseas Volvo lovers who prefer petrol to diesel, the automaker is also working to reduce carbon dioxide output in its 1.6-liter T3 petrol engine. Already powertrain experts have taken the system's CO2 emissions rate down to 135-g/km.
A select group of new Volvo models will be the first to obtain the automatic transmission option. That list includes the S60, V60, V70 and S80.
